Make quick and secure person-to-person payments with Popmoney

When you have to pay someone, what are your two options? Cash or check. But driving to an ATM can be a hassle, and the person you’re paying isn’t always the fastest with depositing a check. However, Popmoney from State Bank allows you to make secure person-to-person payments using an email address or mobile phone number.

How does Popmoney work?

Let’s say you owe your friend money for getting you concert tickets. Here’s what you would do:

  • Login to Popmoney, or simply use the Popmoney icon in online/mobile banking
    Note: You must be enrolled in Bill Pay to take advantage of Popmoney. Get started with Bill Pay!
  • Enter the amount you owe your friend
  • Enter their email address or their mobile phone number
  • Select which account you would like the payment to come from
  • Click submit

Your friend will receive either a text or email stating they have money to be deposited. They don’t have to have a Popmoney account. Once they accept the funds, they will be deposited from your account to their account. It’s that easy!

You can also use Popmoney to request money from others.


When would I use Popmoney?

There’s a number of situations where using Popmoney would come in handy:

  • Sending money- “Thanks for mowing our lawn last week, here’s what we owe you!”
  • Requesting money- “It was great getting to go to the concert with you. The ticket was $60. Thanks!”
  • Collecting from groups- “Hi, parents. The cost for our Boy Scout cookout this weekend is $20 each. Thanks for your support!”
  • Recurring payments- “Hey, I set up a recurring payment so you’ll receive my half of the rent on time each month. Thanks!”

Popmoney FAQs

What is Popmoney? Popmoney is an innovative personal payment service that eliminates the hassle of checks and cash.  Sending and receiving money is as easy as emailing and texting. You only need to have a current bank account.

How does Popmoney work?

  • To Send Money: Login to your onlie banking account and you find Popmoney located within the Bill Pay tab.  Send money to anyone using their email address or account information. You will be notified when the transaction is completed.
  • To Receive Money: When you receive money, you will receive a text message or an email. You can also login to online banking and direct the funds to your account. If your financial institution does not offer Popmoney, you can provide your acocunt information at Popmoney.com and your money will be direct to your account.

What can I use Popmoney for? Some examples of the ways you can utilize Popmoney are to send money to your child at college, reimburse friends or family, or even pay your rent, babysitter, or roommates.

Will my account information be shared with the recipient? No, your account information is not shared with anyone through Popmoney. The recipient will only see your name and any message that you wrote for the payment.

What are the different ways to send money?

  • Email address: Your contact will receive an email with instructions on how to direct the payment into his or her account.
  • Mobile Number: A text message will be sent to the recipient on your behalf with instructions on how to direct the payment into his or her account. Standard message and data rates may apply.
  • Account information: Using your routing and account number, the money will be deposited directly into your contact’s account.  You will also have the option to send an email to notify the recipient.

When will the recipient receive the funds? This depends on the delivery option that was selected by the sender. If the sender selects 3 days or standard delivery, the recipient will receive the funds 3 business days after accepting the payment. If the sender selects Next Day or Express, then the recipient will receive the funds 1 business day after accepting the payment. 

When will the funds be deducted from my account? If you make a payment after 9:00 p.m., CST, or on a non-business day, the funds will be debited from your account on the next business day.

Are there limits on my payments?  For your protection, limits have been created on how much money and how many payments can be sent during various time periods. The “Help” icon next to the “Amounts” field will allow you to view your available limits. 

Can I send money internationally? No, currently you can only use Popmoney to send money within the United States. If you send a payment to your contact’s email or mobile, your contact will be required to provide a US bank account to receive the funds. Otherwise, the payment cannot be processed and the funds will be returned to your bank account. 

Can I cancel a payment? Yes!  You may cancel a payment any time before or on the send date. Your contact will be notified if you cancel a payment after a payment notification has been sent.

Can I request money from someone? You may request money from someone by using their email address or mobile number.

When will I receive the funds? You will receive the funds approximately 3 business days after the recipient of the request completes a payment.

What if I am expecting a payment but don’t see it? If you are expecting a payment and it isn’t listed in your incoming payments, the most likely situation is that you have not added the email address or mobile number from which the payment was sent. You may add this information under the Preferences section. Once you have this step done, you should be able to see the payment.

Once the money is deposited, when are the funds available?  Click activity to view the estimated date when the funds will be available. All payments are available with 3 business days. Some may be available sooner depending on delivery speed and the date the payment was sent.

What do I do if the sender provided the wrong mobile number or I cannot receive text messages on my phone? Please contact the sender to edit the mobile number.  The funds will be returned to the sender if you are unable to verify access to the mobile number.

What is an automatic deposit? An Automatic Deposit is the easiest and fastest way to receive money. Automatic Deposit allows you to designate one account for payments you receive. After selecting this option, you will continue to be notified of incoming payment by email or text message and all payments will be sent to the selected account. You can edit automatic deposit settings in your Preferences. 

What happens when a payment from someone expires?  You have ten days from the send date to deposit a payment to your account.  When a payment expires, the funds are returned to the sender. After a payment expires, you will have to contact your sender to request another payment.

Is there a fee to use Popmoney? There are minimal fees associated with Popmoney. The standard option (3 business days) is $0.50 and the Next Business Day option is $0.85. The fee is added to the amount you are sending or substracted from the amount you are requesting. Fees are listed each time you select a delivery option. Please contact an e-banker or call us at 319-483-1005 for additional information.
